4-Day Private Tour Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora

Discover the roots of ancient Greece on a 4-day private tour from Athens, journeying through some of the country's most remarkable historical landscapes. From the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae to Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, onward to Delphi, home of the famous Oracle, and finally to the extraordinary monasteries of Meteora, this classical Greece tour visits four UNESCO World Heritage Sites at a pace entirely your own.

Traveling with a private driver means you explore without the constraints of group travel, free to linger where your interests lead. We have been arranging this route since 2010, which is how we know which viewpoint catches the best light at Meteora and which monasteries are open on which day.

    The Experience

    • Explore the remains of powerful ancient kingdoms in the Peloponnese, from the Lion Gate at Mycenae to the theatre of Epidaurus, and stand in the stadium where the first Olympic Games were held.
    • Follow the paths once taken by pilgrims beneath Mount Parnassus before continuing north to the Meteora monasteries, where centuries-old religious communities rise above the Thessalian plain.
    • Beyond the archaeological sites, you'll experience the changing landscapes of mainland Greece, stop in traditional towns like Nafplio and Arachova, enjoy panoramic viewpoints, and pause whenever you wish for local cuisine, photographs, or simply to take in the scenery.

This is the classical tour of Greece the way it should be done: four days, your own private vehicle and English speaking driver, and time to actually stand in each place. Golden hour over the Meteora rocks, the monasteries at their quietest, and a honey farm in the hills of Olympia that no coach tour stops at. Here is how the four days unfold.

    Day 1: Athens - Corinth Canal - Epidaurus - Mycenae - Nafplio - Olympia

    • Your 4-day private tour begins when your driver meets you at your Athens hotel, apartment, port or the airport and heads south into the Peloponnese. First stop is the Corinth Canal (approx. 80 km, 1 hour), the narrow cut through solid rock that links the Aegean with the Ionian Sea.
    • Continue into the Argolid for the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 4th century BC and still famous for acoustics so precise that a coin dropped in the orchestra can be heard from the top row. The site also includes the Sanctuary of Asklepios, the healing center of the ancient Greek world.
    • Next is Mycenae, the citadel of Agamemnon and the center of the Bronze Age world in the 14th century BC. Walk through the monumental Lion Gate, see the royal shaft graves where the Mask of Agamemnon was found, and visit the beehive shaped Treasury of Atreus.
    • Midday break in Nafplio, the first capital of Greece after independence. Walk the neoclassical alleys and marble squares below the Palamidi Fortress, look out to the small island castle of Bourtzi in the bay, and stop for coffee or lunch at the waterfront.
    • In the afternoon, a scenic drive across the Peloponnesian interior brings you to Olympia (approx. 200 km, 2.5 hours) for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 2: Ancient Olympia - Honey and Olive Oil Tasting - Nafpaktos - Delphi

    • The morning is dedicated to Ancient Olympia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the Olympic Games in 776 BC, held here for almost twelve centuries. Walk into the original stadium through the vaulted entrance, see the gymnasium, the workshop of Pheidias and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, which once housed the seated statue counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The site museum holds the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios.
    • Away from the ruins, visit a family run estate in the hills for a private introduction to local honey production, followed by a tasting of regional extra virgin olive oils and wines paired with traditional products from the area. This is the part of the day travelers tend to talk about afterwards.
    • Leaving Olympia, cross the Gulf of Corinth on the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, and stop for a relaxed seaside lunch in the medieval harbor town of Nafpaktos with its Venetian fortress above the port.
    • Continue along the coast and up the slopes of Mount Parnassus to arrive in Delphi for the evening, with free time in the village before dinner. Overnight in Delphi.

Day 3: Delphi - Arachova - Meteora and Sunset around the Rocks

    • Spend the morning at Delphi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered by the ancient Greeks the navel of the world and the seat of the Oracle of Apollo, who advised kings and city states for over a thousand years. Walk the Sacred Way past the Treasury of the Athenians to the Temple of Apollo, the ancient theatre and the stadium, with views over the olive groves of Amfissa down to the Gulf of Corinth. The Delphi Archaeological Museum holds the bronze Charioteer and the Sphinx of Naxos.
    • Before leaving the mountain, stop in the stone built village of Arachova, known for grilled formaela cheese, hand woven rugs and local wine, and a good place to buy something honest to take home.
    • From Parnassus, travel north across the plains of Thessaly to Meteora (approx. 230 km, 3 hours). You arrive in the late afternoon, when your private driver takes you to the best vantage points among the sandstone pillars, around Psaropetra and the road above Holy Trinity Monastery, for the quietest and most photogenic hours of the day.
    • Free time in Kalambaka or Kastraki for dinner and a walk through the old quarter. Overnight at the foot of the rocks.

Day 4: Meteora Monasteries - Thermopylae - Athens

    • The morning belongs to the clifftop monasteries of Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where six active Byzantine communities sit on rock pillars that rise more than 400 meters from the plain, reached by monks who once hauled everything up in rope baskets. You visit the interiors of two of them to see their frescoes and ecclesiastical treasures, with panoramic stops for the others.
    • Options include the Great Meteoron, the oldest and largest, Varlaam with its 16th century frescoes by Frangos Katelanos, Saint Stephen with its wide view over the Pineios valley, Roussanou, Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Holy Trinity, known from the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Each monastery closes on a different day of the week and hours change between summer and winter, so we confirm the exact combination for your travel dates.
    • On the return drive, stop at the narrow pass of Thermopylae (approx. 195 km, 2 hours 15 minutes) to see the monument to King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans who held the Persian army here in 480 BC, along with the memorial to the Thespians and the hill of Kolonos.
    • Your classical Greece tour ends back in Athens (approx. 190 km, 2 hours) in the late afternoon, with drop off at your hotel, the port or the airport.
    • Cross the Corinth Canal on the way to the Peloponnese
    • Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and its famous acoustics
    • Mycenae, the Lion Gate and the tombs of the Homeric kings
    • Nafplio, Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi Castle in the bay
    • Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games
    • Delphi, the Oracle of Apollo and the bronze Charioteer
    • Arachova village and the Rio-Antirrio Bridge crossing
    • Sunset over the Meteora rocks and the clifftop monasteries
    • Thermopylae and the monument of Leonidas and the 300

    • They are optional add-ons you select at checkout. Tick the guide and entrance ticket options on this page and they are added to your cart before payment, then arranged and pre-booked for you at Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora. In Greece only state licensed guides may lead tours inside archaeological sites and monasteries, so adding a guide is the way to get expert commentary. Your driver takes care of the route, the timing and the practical details throughout all four days.
    • Roughly 400 km on day one, 270 km on day two, 240 km on day three and 385 km on day four, always split into stages of two to three hours with stops in between. Day two is the lightest and day one the fullest, which is why we recommend an early start. Nothing is rushed, and your driver adjusts the pace to suit you.
    • Three nights with breakfast are included, in Olympia, Delphi and Kalambaka. We work with 3, 4 or 5 star properties as well as good family run hotels, so tell us your preferred category and room type when you book and we will match it, including family rooms and rooms with a view of the Meteora rocks, subject to availability on your dates.
    • Two interiors is the comfortable number on the final morning, and you see all six from the panoramic viewpoints. Options include the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Saint Stephen, Roussanou, Saint Nicholas Anapafsas and Holy Trinity. Each monastery closes on a different day of the week and hours change between summer and winter, so we confirm the exact combination for your travel date before departure.
    • Yes. Shoulders and knees must be covered for everyone. Men need long trousers, women a skirt below the knee. Wrap around skirts are available at the entrances, but bringing your own is more comfortable. Closed comfortable shoes are worth packing too, since Mycenae, Delphi and the monasteries all involve stone steps and uneven ground.
    • It can. As a private tour, everything is adjustable: extra nights in Olympia or Meteora, a stop at Ancient Nemea or Mystras, a swim on the way, or a start from the port if you are arriving by cruise ship. Many travelers add Santorini or Mykonos at the end, and we handle the ferries or flights and the island transfers as part of the same booking.
    • It is, and it is a common choice for both. The driving is split into comfortable stages and every stop can be shortened or extended on the day. If steps are a concern, Saint Stephen Monastery is reached by a short bridge rather than a long stairway, and the panoramic viewpoints require no climbing. Child seats are available on request at no extra cost.
    • A 30% deposit is required to confirm your booking. It is fully refundable up to 8 days before arrival.
    • Cancellations or changes made 7 days or less before arrival, as well as no-shows, incur 100% cancellation fees.
    • All cancellations or changes must be submitted in writing to PRIVATE TOURS Greece.
