Private Tours in Crete - The Island Has More to Offer Than Most People Know

Private Crete Tours: 17 Years of Uncovering the Island's Hidden Sides

Crete is not one island. It is half a dozen different worlds pressed together along a coastline that stretches further than most people realise. The Bronze Age palace of Knossos. The Venetian harbour of Chania at six in the morning before the crowds arrive. The Samaria Gorge, sixteen kilometres of silence between walls of rock. A beach at Agios Pavlos that has no road to it and stays that way.
Our private tours in Crete are built around the idea that a driver who knows every shortcut and a guide who grew up here make the difference between a good day and a day you genuinely never forget. Maria has been leading private tours of Knossos and the old city of Chania for over a decade. Thanasis knows every back road on the island and has never once been late. Together, they cover Crete the way it deserves to be covered, without a group itinerary, without a flag to follow, and without a single moment that feels wasted.
Pickup from your hotel, cruise port, or airport in Heraklion, Chania, or Rethymno. The rest is entirely up to you.

How Long Is a Private Tour in Crete?

Our private Crete tours run from a half day of 3 to 4 hours to a full day of 8 to 10 hours. A half-day covers Knossos or the old city of Chania comfortably. A full-day private tour of Crete opens the door to multiple sites, a long lunch at a local taverna, and time at a beach that most tourists driving the main road will never find.
Cruise passengers or hotel guests?
We design shore excursions in Crete around your ship's schedule and multi-day itineraries around your hotel base. Tell us your port of call or your accommodation and we build the day around that.

What to See on a Private Tour of Crete?

Most visitors to Crete see Knossos and the harbour and leave thinking they've done it. They haven't. Our private tours of Crete cover the island at depth, from ancient palaces to hidden south coast beaches that require Thanasis to reach. For a broader look at things to do in Crete beyond the obvious, start there and come back with your shortlist. For a deeper look at the destination itself, we cover that too.

What Our Guests Say

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Maria's knowledge of Knossos is extraordinary. She read the site like a novel, connecting the archaeology to the mythology in a way that made three thousand years feel completely immediate. We've done guided tours all over the world. This was the best."
- Caroline & David, couple from Australia

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Thanasis took us to Agios Pavlos beach by a road we never would have found ourselves. An hour later we were swimming in water the colour of a swimming pool with nobody else around. Then lunch at Lykastos taverna in Archanes village, where the locals actually eat. That was our day in Crete."
- The Mitchell Family, UK

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Our cruise docked in Heraklion at 8am and we were back on board by 5pm having seen Knossos, walked the old city, eaten the best lunch of the trip, and done things I never would have thought to plan myself. Maria was exceptional and Thanasis made every transfer feel effortless."
- Susan R., traveller from the USA

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you pick us up from the cruise port in Heraklion or Chania?
Absolutely. Shore excursions in Crete are one of our most requested services. Thanasis meets you at the port the moment you step off the ship and returns you with time to spare before departure. We know every cruise schedule and have never missed a return.

Is the guide included or can I do a self-guided tour with driver only?
Both options are available. Maria joins full-day tours and site-specific visits like Knossos and the Chania food tour with Mrs Nicol. If you prefer to explore independently with Thanasis as your private driver, we arrange that too. Some of our guests prefer the freedom of having the car and the local knowledge without a fixed commentary.

What are Agios Pavlos and Rodakino beaches?
Both are on the south coast of Crete and both require local knowledge to reach. Agios Pavlos is a series of sandy coves beneath dramatic cliffs, accessible by a rough track that coaches cannot navigate. Rodakino is a long pebble beach in a valley that sees very few visitors even in August. Thanasis knows both roads well.

What is your cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your tour start time for a full refund.

What You'll See on Your Private Crete Tour

Knossos - Europe's Oldest City
The palace of Knossos was already ancient when the Parthenon was being built. Maria has been guiding here for over a decade and approaches the site the way a novelist approaches a story, connecting the frescoes to the mythology, the architecture to the archaeology, and the whole extraordinary place to the world that built it. Most visitors walk through in ninety minutes and leave with photographs. Maria's guests leave with an understanding. See our private Heraklion and Knossos tours here.

Chania and Archanes - Two Sides of Crete
The Venetian harbour, the covered market, and the back alleys of Chania where minarets and Orthodox churches stand within metres of each other. Maria walks Chania the way locals walk it, with the food tour with Mrs Nicol adding a layer no guidebook covers, stopping at the places where Chania feeds itself rather than its tourists. For a swim after the city, Thanasis drives to Seitan Limania, the dramatic turquoise cove carved into the cliffs east of Chania that looks impossible until you're standing in it. For a completely different angle on another day, the road south leads to Archanes village and Lykastos taverna, fourteen kilometres from Heraklion in the middle of Crete's best wine country, where the food is Cretan in the way things were Cretan before tourism arrived.

The South Coast - Agios Pavlos, Rodakino and Samaria
The south coast faces Africa and sees a fraction of the visitors the north receives. Agios Pavlos is a series of sandy coves beneath sandstone cliffs accessible only by a rough track that coaches cannot navigate, best reached from Rethymno. Rodakino is a long curved beach at the end of a valley road where the river meets the sea, equally quiet and equally rewarding. Both are natural stops on tours based out of Rethymno or on a dedicated south coast itinerary. For guests who want to go further, the Samaria Gorge is an extraordinary experience, but it takes honest planning: the walk runs 16 kilometres and needs 5 to 6 hours, followed by a boat from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia and a return by road. Thanasis drops guests at the Xyloskalo entrance and meets them at the exit port. The full day is 10 to 12 hours and is not suitable for cruise passengers with an afternoon departure.
