What You'll See on Your Private Crete Tour
Knossos - Europe's Oldest City
The palace of Knossos was already ancient when the Parthenon was being built. Maria has been guiding here for over a decade and approaches the site the way a novelist approaches a story, connecting the frescoes to the mythology, the architecture to the archaeology, and the whole extraordinary place to the world that built it. Most visitors walk through in ninety minutes and leave with photographs. Maria's guests leave with an understanding. See our private Heraklion and Knossos tours here.
Chania and Archanes - Two Sides of Crete
The Venetian harbour, the covered market, and the back alleys of Chania where minarets and Orthodox churches stand within metres of each other. Maria walks Chania the way locals walk it, with the food tour with Mrs Nicol adding a layer no guidebook covers, stopping at the places where Chania feeds itself rather than its tourists. For a swim after the city, Thanasis drives to Seitan Limania, the dramatic turquoise cove carved into the cliffs east of Chania that looks impossible until you're standing in it. For a completely different angle on another day, the road south leads to Archanes village and Lykastos taverna, fourteen kilometres from Heraklion in the middle of Crete's best wine country, where the food is Cretan in the way things were Cretan before tourism arrived.
The South Coast - Agios Pavlos, Rodakino and Samaria
The south coast faces Africa and sees a fraction of the visitors the north receives. Agios Pavlos is a series of sandy coves beneath sandstone cliffs accessible only by a rough track that coaches cannot navigate, best reached from Rethymno. Rodakino is a long curved beach at the end of a valley road where the river meets the sea, equally quiet and equally rewarding. Both are natural stops on tours based out of Rethymno or on a dedicated south coast itinerary. For guests who want to go further, the Samaria Gorge is an extraordinary experience, but it takes honest planning: the walk runs 16 kilometres and needs 5 to 6 hours, followed by a boat from Agia Roumeli to Sfakia and a return by road. Thanasis drops guests at the Xyloskalo entrance and meets them at the exit port. The full day is 10 to 12 hours and is not suitable for cruise passengers with an afternoon departure.
