5 Hours shore excursion: Today we will have a chance to visit the archaeological site of Ancient Olympia & the Museum and a great winery located 2 minutes away from Ancient Olympia. Discover and taste unique wines from local varieties in an unforgettable excursion to the family winery Olympia Land Estate which is into the green valley of Olympia, called "Valley of Gods"
In the Olympia Land Estate, you will have the opportunity to be part in a tour which start with a walk on the vineyards where you learn about the cultivation of the vines, then you will continue in the production area and finally in the cellar with the oak barrels. After the tour you will enjoy samples of the wines produced here, homemade olive oil and other traditional snacks in the air-conditioned reception area.
- Our driver & the tour guide will pick you up from Katakolo port (from your cruise ship) to reach and explore the Glory of Ancient Greece at the famous archaeological site of Ancient Olympia under the Unesco’s heritage mark. Ancient Olympia lies in the lush valley formed between the Alfios and Kladeos rivers. It is the place where the first Olympic Games ever took place in 776 B.C. and of course, the place where the Olympic flame is ignited every 4 years and transferred from there to the country that hosts the Olympic Games.There you will see the temple of Zeus which in antiquity was housing one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient world, the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, created by the famous Phidias. You will also see the temple of Hera, the shrine of Pelops (one of the oldest in the sanctuary), the Council house where the athletes took the Olympic oath, the Treasury houses, the Gymnasium and the Palestra where they used to exercise for a month prior to the Games. Also, you will visit the Stadium where the marble starting blocks are still in position.
- Next visit will be at the "Ktima Olympia Gi winery" which is located around 2 kilometers away from Ancient Olympia at the point where our ancestors 150 years ago began cultivating raisins and olive trees. Estate Olympia Gi is a family winery that produces small quantities of wines known for their exceptional quality. They follow the family tradition inOlympia, the cradle of culture and the Olympic ideal. Once upon a time, the ancient Greeks of the region made wine and organized banquets, and today they produce quality wine inspired by the customs and traditions of that time. The special climate and teroir of the valley plays the most important role in this cultivation, because the plants are protected from extreme weather phenomena, which as a result provides a stable quality in production. The Greek white varieties Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Moschofilero, the Greek red Agiorgitiko, Augustiatis, the French white Chardonnay and the international red varieties Syrah and Merlot have been planted and cultivated with special care in a winery of 35 acres.
