Best Wineries in Athens – Wine Tasting Tours & Vineyard Experiences
Most visitors to Athens spend their days between the Acropolis and the Plaka, which makes sense. But within 45 minutes of the city, the Attica region produces wines that have been grown on this particular soil since antiquity, at family estates that the tourist map has never reached. The best wineries in Athens are not in the city at all. They are on the eastern slopes of the Attica plain, in the Mesogeia area, where Savatiano has been the dominant white grape for centuries and where a growing number of estates are making wines that deserve serious attention. Our private wine tasting tours in Athens take you to the ones worth the drive, with a guide who knows the owners by name and the vineyards by vintage.
We have been taking guests to the Athens wine tasting experiences since 2010. What the Attica wine road offers is not the volcanic drama of Santorini or the altitude of Nemea. It is something quieter: a morning in a tasting room that looks out over the vines, with the person who planted them explaining what grows here and why it tastes the way it does.

Best Wineries Near Athens to Visit
Domaine Papagiannakos - Located in Markopoulo Mesogeas, about 35 minutes from central Athens. The first bioclimatic winery in Greece, built on the site of an old monastery in the heart of the Mesogian plain. Four generations of the Papagiannakos family have been making wine here since 1919. Known for a meaty old-vine Savatiano and a genuinely excellent modern Retsina that changes most people's opinion of the grape. Open weekdays and Saturdays.
Mylonas Winery - Located in Keratea, about 45 minutes from Athens. Run by three brothers who have made themselves the leading ambassadors of the Savatiano grape in Greece. Founded in 1917, currently producing six different expressions of Savatiano, from steely and mineral to barrel-aged and late harvest. Small in scale, serious in quality. Visits by appointment.
Kokotos Estate - Located in Stamata, 40 to 50 minutes from Athens, at the foot of Mount Pendeli where Dionysus was once worshipped. George and Anne Kokotos founded the estate in 1980, planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Malagouzia on seven hectares of organic vineyards. Surrounded by olive groves and pine forest. Cheese and olive oil from their own production accompany the tastings.
Nikolou Winery - Located in Koropi, the only winery in Attica specialising in sparkling wines made by the traditional method. Founded in 1875. A genuinely unusual stop for those interested in Greek wine beyond the standard varieties.
Markou Vineyards - Part of the Wines of Athens collective, known for a new-generation Retsina with discreet resin aromas and a light, approachable character. One of the estates redefining what Attica wine can be for a new audience.
