Santorini or Crete? Paros or Naxos? When travelers write to us about the Greek islands, the first question is almost never about ferries or hotels. It is which island to choose. After planning island trips from our Athens office since 2010, I can tell you that there is no single list of the best Greek islands to visit, only the right island for the way you like to travel.

The Best Greek Islands to Visit, by Travel Style

Santorini: Caldera Views and Famous Sunsets

Santorini is the island most first-time visitors picture before they arrive: the caldera, white villages on the edge of the cliffs, and the sunset in Oia. It is one of the best Greek islands to visit for couples, honeymooners, and anyone who wants the view that made the Greek islands famous.

Maybe not for you if you want long sandy beaches or quiet streets in July and August. The beaches are volcanic, and the caldera villages fill up when cruise ships are in port.

How long to stay: at least two nights.

Our tip: for a quieter sunset than Oia, watch it from the village of Pyrgos or from Skaros Rock in Imerovigli. If you enjoy walking, the cliff path from Fira to Oia takes about 3 to 4 hours and is best started early in the morning. On the island, Loukas coordinates our transfers from the port or airport. Mykonos: Energy, Beaches, and Delos

Mykonos is for travelers who want energy: beach clubs, late dinners, and a lively old town of narrow whitewashed lanes. It is the best Greek island to visit if nightlife is part of the plan, and it pairs naturally with the landscapes of Santorini.

Maybe not for you if you are looking for a quiet or budget-friendly island in high season.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Crete: History, Food, and Endless Variety

Crete is the largest Greek island and the easiest to recommend for families, food lovers, and anyone interested in history. In a single trip you can walk through the Minoan palace of Knossos, hike the Samaria Gorge, eat in mountain villages like Anogia, and spend your afternoons on long beaches.

Maybe not for you if you only have one or two days. Crete is too big to rush.

How long to stay: 3 to 4 days, depending on how much of the island you want to cover. One of our guests put it simply after a 16-day trip across Greece: “Crete in itself needs at least 10-14 days.”

• Visit Margarites, the potters' village near Rethymno
• Spend time in Anogia, known for its weaving, lyra music, and mantinades
• In October and November, look for kazanemata, the village gatherings where raki is distilled

• Stop in Archanes, a traditional wine village close to Knossos

Paros: Relaxed Style and Easy Connections

Paros has the classic Cycladic look without the intensity of Mykonos: good beaches, the fishing village of Naoussa, and the old town of Parikia. It suits couples, families, and travelers planning their first island hopping trip.

Maybe not for you if you want complete quiet in August, when Naoussa is at its busiest.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Our tip: walk the old Byzantine path from Lefkes down to Prodromos, a stone trail through olive groves that takes about an hour. On Paros, Stelios drives our guests and stays with them wherever the day goes.

Local traditions:

• Join the Pirates' Festival in Naoussa on August 23
• Look for the summer fish and wine festival in Naoussa
• Walk to the ancient marble quarries at Marathi

Naxos: Long Beaches, Mountain Villages, and Local Food

Naxos is larger than most Cycladic islands and greener inland, with long sandy beaches, mountain villages, and a strong farming tradition. It is one of the best Greek islands to visit for families and for travelers who want island life that still feels local.

Maybe not for you if nightlife is a priority. Evenings on Naxos are about tavernas, not clubs.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Our tip: see the unfinished marble kouroi, giant ancient statues still lying in the quarries at Melanes and near Apollonas, exactly where the sculptors left them.

Local traditions:

• Walk the marble lanes of Apeiranthos, where locals still speak their own dialect
• Visit the Vallindras Kitron Distillery in Halki
• Join the festival of Panagia in Filoti on August 15
• Taste Arseniko Naxou and Naxos graviera, both protected local cheeses

Syros: The Elegant Capital of the Cyclades

Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades, and its main town, Ermoupoli, feels more like a small city than a village, with neoclassical mansions, a marble town square, and a working harbor. It suits travelers who have already seen Santorini and Mykonos and want an island where local life comes first.

Maybe not for you if your trip is all about beaches. Syros has good ones, but the town is the real reason to go.

How long to stay: 1 to 2 days, often combined with Santorini or Mykonos.

Our tip: climb up to Ano Syros, the medieval upper town, for the view back over Ermoupoli and the harbor.

Local traditions:

• Buy loukoumi and halvadopita from the traditional workshops of Ermoupoli
• Taste San Michali, the island's protected cheese
• Climb to the Catholic cathedral of Agios Georgios in Ano Syros
• Visit the Markos Vamvakaris Museum, dedicated to the father of rebetiko music

Rhodes: Medieval Old Town and Lindos

Rhodes combines one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe with the whitewashed village and ancient acropolis of Lindos. It suits families, history lovers, and travelers who want sunshine and sightseeing on the same day.

Maybe not for you if you want a small, quiet island. Rhodes is large and busy in summer, especially when cruise ships are in port.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Our tip: visit Lindos early, before the midday heat, and walk the dry moat around the medieval walls of the Old Town, a quiet green path below the fortifications. With an extra day, take the boat to Symi. In Rhodes, Evangelia drives our guests and stays with them through the day.

Local traditions:

• See the captains' houses of Lindos, with their pebble mosaic floors
• Look for traditional Lindian ceramic plates, a craft with centuries of history
• Walk through Koskinou, known for its colorful doors and courtyards

Corfu: Venetian Old Town and Green Landscapes

Corfu feels different from the Aegean islands. It is green, the light is softer, and the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shows 400 years of Venetian rule in its streets. It suits couples, food lovers, and travelers who enjoy history and slow walks.

Maybe not for you if you are looking for the classic white-and-blue Cycladic look.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Our tip: explore the old town on foot with food stops along the way, then drive to Kanoni for the view over Vlacherna Monastery and Pontikonisi, where planes land just overhead.

Local traditions:

• Watch the botides on Holy Saturday at 11 AM, when locals throw clay pots from their balconies
• Follow the processions of Saint Spyridon with the town's philharmonic bands
• Catch a cricket match on the Spianada, a tradition from the British period
• Eat in the stone houses of Palaia Perithia, the old village on Mount Pantokrator

Kefalonia: Dramatic Coastline and Harbor Villages

Kefalonia is large, green, and less developed than many Greek islands, with Myrtos Beach, the village of Assos, and the harbor of Fiskardo. It suits couples and families who want nature and space.

Maybe not for you if you do not want to spend time on the road. Distances are long, so a private driver makes a real difference.

How long to stay: 3 days or more.

Our tip: in the morning, look for loggerhead sea turtles near the fishing boats in Argostoli harbor, and see Myrtos Beach from the viewpoint on the road above, where the light is best in the afternoon.

Local traditions:

• Visit Panagia ton Fidion in Markopoulo, where small snakes appear between August 6 and 15
• Join the festival of Agios Gerasimos on August 16 or October 20
• Listen to kantades in the tavernas of Argostoli and Lixouri
• Taste Robola wine and Kefalonian meat pie

Zakynthos: Navagio and Turquoise Water

Zakynthos is famous for Navagio, the shipwreck beach enclosed by white cliffs, and for the sea caves along its coast. It suits families and travelers who want turquoise water and dramatic scenery.

Maybe not for you if you want a quiet island in August, when the resort areas are at their busiest.

How long to stay: 2 to 3 days.

Our tip: access to the beach at Navagio can be restricted, so the viewpoint above the bay is often the easier plan.

• Listen to kantades and arekia, the island's traditional songs
• See the omilies, street folk theater performed during Carnival
• Join the procession of Agios Dionysios on August 24 or December 17

Choosing an Island by Season

May, June, and September are the best months for most Greek islands, with warm weather and fewer crowds than July and August. If you are traveling in high summer, the Ionian islands such as Corfu and Kefalonia are greener and usually less windy than the Cyclades, where the meltemi wind often blows in July and August. Crete and Rhodes, in the far south, keep their warm weather longest into the autumn.
